The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has issued an urgent warning to students over a fake notice circulating online about Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) loan applications.
The misleading notice claims that applications for the 2026/27 KMTC first-time and subsequent loans will open on July 15. However, HELB has dismissed the announcement as fake.
In a public advisory issued on Tuesday, July 1, the board urged students to verify all loan-related information through its official channels.
“The KMTC loan application notice circulating online is FAKE and was not issued by HELB. Always verify all communication through HELB’s official channels only.”
The fake notice had been shared widely among students awaiting news on when the KMTC loan application portal will open. HELB said the official opening is expected during the second week of July, but no specific date has been announced.
The board also warned students against falling victim to misinformation and possible scams linked to the fake announcement.
According to HELB, the fraudulent notice encouraged students to prepare their application documents ahead of the alleged July 15 opening date. The agency has since urged applicants to disregard the information entirely.
HELB further clarified that the phone number 0711052000 should not be used for enquiries or services, warning members of the public against relying on the contact details provided in the fake notice.
The board explained that the opening of the first-time KMTC loan application portal will depend on the completion of student placement by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
Placement is yet to begin as KUCCPS continues to receive requests from students who missed the application deadline, allowing them to seek consideration by submitting emails after the application window was extended.
Meanwhile, HELB has already opened subsequent loan applications for continuing students for the 2026/27 academic year, with the process beginning on June 1.
Although first-time applicants are still waiting for an official opening date, students who sat the 2025 KCSE examinations have been advised to prepare the required documents in advance.
Applicants will need a copy of their National ID, Maisha Card or birth certificate, a passport-size photograph, a valid email address and mobile phone number, as well as their KCPE and KCSE index numbers together with the years they sat the examinations.
Students are now being encouraged to keep checking HELB’s official platforms for verified updates as they await the launch of the first-time KMTC loan application portal.
