IEBC Allows Agents to Photograph Form 34A Ahead of Ol Kalou By-election

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has pledged to deliver a transparent and credible Ol Kalou by-election, announcing new measures designed to boost public confidence in the electoral process.

Speaking on Tuesday, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said party agents will be allowed to photograph Form 34A at polling stations immediately after results are declared and share the images with their respective candidates.

“The results management and declaration process will be transparent. Agents will be allowed to take photos of Form 34A and send them to their candidates. Ballot boxes will be counted and results tabulated in an open and transparent process,” Ethekon said.

The commission said the move is part of a broader effort to strengthen transparency during voting, counting and the declaration of results.

According to Ethekon, the additional safeguards are intended to enhance public trust and ensure every stage of the by-election is conducted openly and in accordance with the law.

The IEBC also issued a warning to politicians, urging them to comply with the Electoral Code of Conduct throughout the campaign period.

“We have summoned some politicians and taken action against some of them, including imposing fines and requiring them to sign the Political Parties Code of Conduct. The Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee will continue its work until after the results are announced,” Ethekon said.

He urged voters, candidates and political parties to report any cases of electoral malpractice or violations of election laws without delay, saying the commission stands ready to investigate and respond to all complaints.

The Ol Kalou by-election will mark the first major electoral test for the reconstituted IEBC under Ethekon’s leadership, placing the commission’s commitment to transparency and accountability under close public scrutiny.

The commission maintains that the entire electoral process—from voting and ballot counting to the final declaration of results—will be conducted openly and in strict compliance with Kenya’s electoral laws.
