Fred Matiang’i Tops Mt Kenya Presidential Poll as Ruto, Gachagua Trail – Infotrak Survey

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has emerged as the most preferred presidential aspirant in the Mt Kenya region, according to the latest Infotrak survey, strengthening his standing ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The poll, released on Monday, July 13, shows Matiang’i commanding 19 per cent support in Central Kenya, the highest rating among all presidential hopefuls tested in the region.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka follows with 13 per cent, while President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are tied at 12 per cent each.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna rounds out the top five with 11 per cent support in the region.

The findings suggest Matiang’i enjoys considerably stronger backing in Mt Kenya than nationally, where the survey places him at 12 per cent.

Beyond Central Kenya, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary continues to post solid performances, attracting 17 per cent support in Nyanza and 16 per cent in Nairobi.

The survey also highlights growing uncertainty among Mt Kenya voters, with 26 per cent of respondents yet to decide on their preferred presidential candidate—the highest proportion of undecided voters recorded across the country.

Matiang’i Strengthens Position in Opposition Race

The Infotrak survey also assessed potential contenders for the opposition’s presidential ticket.

Kalonzo Musyoka narrowly leads the race with 27 per cent support, closely followed by Matiang’i on 26 per cent.

Edwin Sifuna ranks third with 19 per cent, while Rigathi Gachagua records 9 per cent support.

Regionally, Matiang’i performs strongly across several key voting blocs.

He leads opposition preference in Nairobi with 30 per cent support and also tops the rankings in both Nyanza and Central Kenya with 29 per cent each.

He also secures 27 per cent support in Rift Valley and ties with Sifuna at 25 per cent along the Coast.

Survey Reveals Matiang’i’s Strongest Support Base

According to the demographic analysis, Matiang’i’s strongest backing comes from voters aged 36 to 45 years, where he records 14 per cent support in the presidential preference survey.

Among male respondents, he attracts 13 per cent support compared to 10 per cent among female respondents.

Opposition Ticket Preferences

The survey further examined possible opposition ticket combinations for the 2027 presidential race.

A Kalonzo Musyoka–Fred Matiang’i ticket emerged as the second most preferred nationally with 16 per cent support.

Meanwhile, a Fred Matiang’i–Kalonzo Musyoka combination ranked third at 15 per cent.

The Matiang’i-Kalonzo pairing performed particularly well in Nairobi and Nyanza, attracting 19 per cent support in each region.

It also recorded 17 per cent backing in Central Kenya, 23 per cent in North Eastern and 22 per cent in Eastern Kenya.

Among voters aged between 36 and 45 years, the ticket registered its highest support at 19 per cent.

Other proposed opposition combinations lagged behind.

A Kalonzo Musyoka-Rigathi Gachagua ticket received 5 per cent national support, while Rigathi Gachagua-Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua-Fred Matiang’i, Fred Matiang’i-Rigathi Gachagua and Fred Matiang’i-Martha Karua each attracted between 3 and 4 per cent.

Ruto Retains National Lead

Despite Matiang’i’s strong showing in Mt Kenya and improved standing within the opposition, President William Ruto remains the national frontrunner in the broader presidential preference survey with 32 per cent support.

The latest findings underscore shifting regional political dynamics while suggesting the race toward the 2027 General Election remains highly competitive.
