Gachagua Claims War on Drugs Doomed with ‘Barons’ in Ruto Cabinet

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sensationally claimed that Kenya’s war on drugs is a losing battle, accusing two Cabinet Secretaries in President William Ruto’s government of being “drug barons.”

Speaking during a church service in Ol Jorook, Nyandarua County, Gachagua told congregants that efforts to shield Kenyan youth from the menace of drug and alcohol abuse were futile as long as top state officials were allegedly involved in trafficking.

“When I left the government, Ruto brought two drug barons into his Cabinet as Cabinet Secretaries. How do you expect the fight against drugs to be won? It cannot. Our youth are left in God’s protection,” said Gachagua, who was impeached from office in October last year.

Though he did not name the individuals he was accusing, Gachagua painted a grim picture of government complicity in the drug trade.

The former DP was a vocal crusader against illicit brews in central Kenya during his tenure. On Sunday, he lamented that the resurgence of illegal alcohol sales in the region, which he had flagged earlier, was deliberate and troubling.

“Kenya is now the only country where drug barons sit comfortably in the Cabinet,” he added.

Gachagua also issued a passionate plea to religious leaders, urging the church to speak boldly against corruption and poor governance.

“Parliament has been captured by the Executive. The only remaining hope for Kenyans is the church. Speak loudly. If not, Kenya is gone,” he warned.

His explosive remarks come at a time when the government has been trying to showcase a renewed effort in combating drug and alcohol abuse among the youth. However, Gachagua’s allegations are likely to stir political tensions and raise new questions about the credibility of the ongoing campaigns.
