Tragedy in Vancouver: Driver Rams into Crowd at Filipino Festival, Multiple Dead
A street festival in Vancouver turned tragic on Saturday evening after a car was deliberately driven into a crowd, leaving a number of people dead and several others injured.
According to Vancouver Police, the incident occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. local time (03:00 GMT Sunday) at East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street during the annual Lapu Lapu Day celebrations, a popular event honoring Filipino culture.
Authorities confirmed that the driver responsible for the horrific incident has been taken into custody. However, the exact number of fatalities has yet to be officially announced.
“A driver drove into a crowd at a street festival at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser,” Vancouver Police posted on X (formerly Twitter). “We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds.”
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as festival-goers scrambled to safety. Unverified videos shared on social media showed multiple ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles at the scene, with several injured individuals receiving emergency care on the ground.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim expressed his condolences in a heartfelt statement on X, saying, “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.”
Police are continuing their investigation into the incident, with more details expected to be released in the coming hours. Meanwhile, the city and the wider Filipino community are mourning what should have been a day of celebration turned into a day of sorrow.
