Two foreign nationals have been found dead with suspected gunshot wounds inside an apartment in Kilimani, Nairobi, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances of their deaths.

The deceased were identified as Xu Zhiyu, a Chinese national, and Nguyen Hong Ngoc, a Vietnamese national. Their bodies were discovered on Tuesday morning in unit A506 along Chania Avenue after apartment management reported hearing gunshots from the house at around 10 a.m.

Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamud said the apartment door was locked from the inside, preventing immediate access. Officers were called to the scene and management later opened the unit using a spare key. Inside, the two bodies were found seated side by side on a mattress in the sitting room. Both had suspected gunshot wounds to the head.

Crime Scene Investigation officers from the Nairobi Region processed the apartment and recovered a BUL 9mm pistol, a magazine loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition, two spent 9mm cartridges and a handwritten note suspected to be a suicide note. The note is undergoing analysis as detectives work to establish what led to the deaths.

Police suspect the incident may have involved one person shooting the other before turning the firearm on himself. Investigators have not, however, conclusively established the sequence of events.

“We do not know what transpired leading to the incident, but experts are working on the issue,” Mohamud said.

The bodies were moved to Chiromo Funeral Parlour, where they await postmortem examinations. Detectives are examining the recovered evidence, the ownership of the firearm and the events that preceded the deaths. Police have not disclosed further details about the activities of the two foreign nationals or their circumstances before the incident.

Investigators are treating a possible suicide pact as one line of inquiry, though the precise circumstances remain unconfirmed. Postmortem examinations and forensic analysis are expected to provide further clarity.

The recovery of a firearm and spent cartridges inside a residential unit in the densely populated Kilimani neighbourhood has drawn attention to ongoing police work around the case. Authorities have urged caution as investigations continue.

The incident also draws attention to broader concerns around suicide in Kenya, where health professionals and authorities continue to stress the importance of early intervention and access to mental health support.
