KRA Customs collects KES 90.05 billion in September, surpassing target by KES 965 million
The Kenya Revenue Authority’s Customs and Border Control Department exceeded its monthly target for September 2026, driven by stronger non-oil imports, higher motor vehicle volumes and growth in containerised cargo.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Customs and Border Control Department collected KES 90.053 billion in September 2026, surpassing the National Treasury target of KES 89.088 billion by KES 965 million.
The figure represents a 101.1 per cent performance rate and a 5.8 per cent increase from the KES 85.146 billion collected in the same month last year.
According to an official KRA statement released on October 12, 2026, the growth was supported by solid performance in non-oil commodities, rising trade volumes and higher containerised cargo throughput at major entry points.
Non-oil revenues reached KES 57.199 billion against a departmental target of KES 55.422 billion, an overshoot of KES 1.777 billion. Collections were boosted by imports of fertilisers, iron and steel, palm oil and rice.
Motor vehicle import volumes rose by 8.1 per cent during the month, while containerised cargo measured in Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) increased by 8.2 per cent. Overall import values expanded by 25.6 per cent.
KRA said the results reflect the impact of ongoing customs administrative reforms, modernised compliance frameworks and trade facilitation measures.
“The September performance reinforces KRA’s commitment to mobilising revenue required to finance the Government’s development priorities, support economic growth, and strengthen the country’s fiscal position,” the authority stated.
The September outcome follows a strong start to the financial year. Customs collections stood at KES 89.10 billion in June 2026 and rose to a monthly high of KES 92.53 billion in July 2026, when the department exceeded its KES 86.16 billion target by KES 6.37 billion.
Customs revenue forms a significant part of Kenya’s overall tax collections and supports funding for public services, infrastructure and development programmes. The latest figures indicate sustained activity in import trade despite broader economic pressures.
