DCI Reveal Chilling Clue That Led Detectives to Molo Student Murder Suspect

NAKURU, Kenya — Detectives have arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of murdering 18-year-old Molo Secondary School student Joy Wangui, bringing a sustained manhunt in Nakuru County to an end.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on Tuesday that the suspect, identified as Kipkoech, was arrested at a hideout in Lagwenda village, Kuresoi North, where investigators believe he had been staying since the killing.

The operation was carried out by detectives from Molo in coordination with officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) at the Regional Criminal Investigations Headquarters in the Rift Valley.

The DCI described the arrest as the culmination of an intensive search for the suspect following Wangui’s death.

“A murder suspect who went on the run after the brutal killing of a Form Four student in Molo has been arrested, following a sustained manhunt by detectives,” the DCI said.

Suspect allegedly found wearing blood-stained clothes

According to investigators, detectives tracked the suspect to the village hideout before moving in and arresting him.

The DCI said he was allegedly wearing blood-stained boxer shorts, a white T-shirt and black jeans bearing visible dry blood stains when officers found him.

Investigators also noted that the white T-shirt allegedly carried the name of the deceased student on its hem.

“When the long arm of the law finally caught up with him, Kipkoech was wearing a blood-stained boxer, a white T-shirt bearing the deceased’s name at the hem, and black jeans with visible dry blood stains,” the DCI said.

The suspect was subsequently taken to Molo Police Station as detectives continued gathering evidence ahead of his expected arraignment.

His arrest marks a major development in the investigation, although the circumstances and motive surrounding Wangui’s death remain subject to further police inquiries.

Investigators probe alleged relationship

Detectives are also examining the possibility that a relationship dispute may have preceded the killing.

Preliminary investigations cited by the DCI indicate that the suspect was allegedly Wangui’s boyfriend, with investigators pursuing the nature of their relationship as part of efforts to establish a possible motive.

Police have not, however, conclusively established what led to the student’s death.

The alleged relationship and any connection to the killing remain matters for investigators to establish through evidence.

Student discovered dead at family home

Wangui was reportedly found dead on Sunday evening at her family’s home in the Kiambaa area of Moto Location.

Her brother is said to have discovered her body after returning from a brief errand.

According to the DCI’s account, the teenager was found in the kitchen, where investigators reported finding significant blood loss and severe injuries.

Police also recovered several weapons near the scene, including a bloodstained axe, a panga and two knives.

Investigators further reported finding the student’s head in a corridor and an alleged message written in blood on a wall.

The reported message contained references to love and cheating and included an apology, according to the police account.

Detectives are now working to establish a clear sequence of events leading to the student’s death and determine the evidence linking the arrested man to the crime.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue and is expected to face court proceedings.

As the case moves forward, the allegations against him have yet to be tested in court, and he remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
