Atwoli Demands Uhuru Arrest After Explosive 2022 Election Claim

Francis Atwoli has dramatically called for former President Uhuru Kenyatta to be arrested after the retired Head of State made fresh claims about the 2022 presidential election.

The outspoken COTU-Kenya Secretary General launched the extraordinary demand while speaking in Khwisero on Tuesday, September 29, accusing Kenyatta of breaking his presidential oath by revealing sensitive information after leaving office.

At the centre of the storm is Kenyatta’s claim that the late former ODM leader Raila Odinga actually won the 2022 presidential election but was denied victory.

The explosive assertion has reopened one of Kenya’s most fiercely contested political debates — and Atwoli is now demanding answers from the former president.

‘Uhuru Should Be Arrested’

Atwoli questioned how Odinga’s votes could allegedly have been stolen while Kenyatta was still occupying State House and serving as Commander-in-Chief.

“Now that is outside government; he knows how Raila was rigged out of the election. How could Raila’s votes have been stolen yet he was the President and Commander in Chief?” Atwoli said.

He went further, arguing that Kenyatta should explain what he knew at the time and what action he took while still in office.

Atwoli also invoked the obligations attached to the handling of government secrets, arguing that former leaders remain bound by the oaths they took while in office.

“The law on leadership states that if you were a leader and took an oath to keep all government secrets, and if you retire, you will not speak about them. Uhuru should be arrested for breaking the oath,” he said.

The remarks immediately raise a striking question: if Kenyatta believed Odinga had been denied victory, why did he allow the transfer of power to proceed?

Uhuru’s Bombshell Reignites 2022 Election Debate

Kenyatta’s comments have reignited political arguments surrounding the 2022 presidential contest, more than four years after Ruto was declared the winner.

The former president’s claim has already prompted questions from within the political circles associated with Odinga.

ODM leader Oburu Oginga questioned why Kenyatta handed power to Ruto if he genuinely believed that Odinga had won the election.

That question now hangs over the latest political confrontation: what did Kenyatta know, when did he know it, and what did he do about it?

Ruto Also Enters the Row

President William Ruto has also weighed into the controversy, warning political leaders against making what he described as reckless statements.

Although Ruto did not directly name Kenyatta in the remarks, his comments came amid the renewed political storm surrounding the former president’s statements.

The Jubilee Party subsequently hit back, accusing Ruto of lacking the moral authority to lecture other politicians about decorum and reckless utterances.

Meanwhile, leaders from Ukambani allied to Ruto have continued their criticism of Kenyatta, including over his political dealings with the region and his relationship with former political allies.

Political Storm Grows

Atwoli’s intervention has now added a dramatic new dimension to the debate.

What began as a renewed discussion about the disputed 2022 election has escalated into a public confrontation over what a former president can disclose after leaving office — and whether his claims about events during his presidency could have legal consequences.

For now, Atwoli is demanding that Kenyatta explain how Odinga’s alleged loss occurred and what steps were taken at the time.

His call for the former president’s arrest, however, is a political demand rather than evidence that Kenyatta has been arrested or charged with an offence.

Any actual legal action would depend on the relevant authorities and, where necessary, the courts.
