University of Eldoret lecturer faces disciplinary action over Ruto 2027 remarks

A University of Eldoret part-time lecturer is facing disciplinary proceedings after he was filmed making political remarks during a class and telling students not to return to the institution if President William Ruto loses the 2027 General Election.

The lecturer was recorded during a teaching session on September 24, 2026, in which he challenged students who suggested that Ruto could serve only one term.

The video, recorded inside a lecture hall and subsequently circulated online, shows the lecturer discussing the President’s prospects of seeking a second term before directing students who disagreed with him towards universities in their respective home regions.

The remarks were made during a session of SHUM 211: State and Society Development at the University of Eldoret’s ED5 lecture hall, according to the university.

The institution has since distanced itself from the comments and confirmed that disciplinary action has been initiated against the unnamed lecturer.

“The University wishes to state unequivocally that the utterances attributed to the said lecturer do not represent, reflect, or in any way constitute the position, policy, or official views of the University of Eldoret.”

The university said the proceedings would be conducted in accordance with its policies, regulations and principles of due process.

Lecturer challenges ‘one-term’ claims

In the footage, the lecturer appears to reject suggestions that Ruto could serve only one term in office.

He compares the presidency with other elective positions, including MPs, senators and MCAs, while insisting that the President would seek another term.

The exchange then turns more directly towards the 2027 presidential election, with the lecturer telling students that they should consider studying elsewhere if Ruto were to lose.

He specifically referred to students from Western Kenya and the Mt Kenya region, pointing to universities in those areas as alternatives.

The comments have attracted attention because they were made during an academic session and involved students being addressed about their political views and where they should study depending on the outcome of a future election.

The university has not publicly identified the lecturer or disclosed the specific disciplinary measures being considered.

University condemns remarks

In its statement, the University of Eldoret described the comments as “unfortunate and unacceptable” and said staff members, including part-time lecturers, are expected to maintain professional standards while carrying out their duties.

The university highlighted professionalism, academic integrity, respect, inclusivity and responsible conduct as standards expected of its employees.

It also stressed that it serves a diverse student population drawn from Kenya and other countries.

“We remain firmly committed to discharging our constitutional and statutory mandate while safeguarding the dignity, rights, safety, and welfare of all members of our University community.”

The institution further reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, institutional accountability, equality and non-discrimination.

Video sparks debate ahead of 2027

The incident comes as political debate intensifies ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election, with President Ruto expected to be a central figure in the contest.

The university’s response makes clear that the lecturer’s remarks should not be interpreted as an official institutional position.

The disciplinary process will now determine whether the lecturer’s conduct breached the university’s applicable rules and professional standards.

For now, the University of Eldoret has not announced the outcome of the proceedings or any final sanction against the lecturer.
