Ol Kalou By-Election: DCP Campaign Truck Attacked and Set Ablaze Near Gilgil

The Ol Kalou by-election campaign has been rocked by fresh security concerns after a Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) campaign truck was attacked by armed individuals near Pembroke Bridge in Gilgil during a civic education exercise.

According to the party and witnesses, the vehicle came under attack while conducting civic education activities ahead of the July 16 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

The attackers allegedly fired tear gas canisters at the truck, forcing the driver to flee the scene. The assailants reportedly chased the vehicle until it became stuck before setting it on fire. The blaze was later extinguished before it could completely destroy the truck.

DCP said it had been unable to account for the whereabouts of the truck driver following the incident.

Other members of the campaign team escaped on foot amid what the party described as gunfire during the attack.

The incident is the latest in a string of allegations that have heightened political tensions surrounding the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, with concerns growing over the security of campaign activities.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has already warned that persistent violence, voter bribery, destruction of campaign materials and other breaches of the Electoral Code of Conduct could undermine the credibility and smooth conduct of the election.

The commission has urged all political players and their supporters to comply with electoral laws and uphold peaceful campaigns ahead of polling day.

The Ol Kalou race has been marked by accusations and counter-accusations between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the opposition-backed Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), with both sides expressing concerns over security and the conduct of campaigns.

With only days remaining before voters head to the polls on July 16, attention is expected to remain focused on whether security agencies can maintain order and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
