“There Is Nothing You Can Do to Me!” Gachagua Dares Murkomen

The war of words between Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen intensified on Wednesday, July 8, after the former deputy president dismissed accusations that he was inciting Kenyans and challenged the government to take action against him.

Speaking during a meeting with leaders from Westlands Constituency, Gachagua rejected Murkomen’s claims that he had been inciting residents of the Mount Kenya region. Instead, he insisted that he was merely telling Kenyans what he described as the truth.

“I heard him saying that I am inciting people. I want to tell you, I am telling the people the truth, and that truth is what they are calling incitement. There is nothing you can do to me, and there is nowhere you will take me.”

Gachagua also renewed his criticism of President William Ruto, accusing the Head of State of systematically sidelining political allies and business leaders from the Mount Kenya region.

According to Gachagua, the president had abandoned not only elected leaders but also entrepreneurs who financially supported his successful 2022 presidential campaign.

He further warned leaders from the region who remain in government, saying they would eventually face a similar fate.

“He started with me, then went to Mithika Linturi and Justin Muturi. Mwangi Kiunjuri and Ichung’wah, you are next in line; he will deal with all of you. You should thank me for pushing for his removal.”

Murkomen swiftly responded, accusing Gachagua of deliberately creating fear and tension in the Mount Kenya region for political gain.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary alleged that the former deputy president was using intimidation to pressure influential businesspeople and claimed that businesses belonging to those who resisted were at risk of attacks.

“The businesses of those who refuse to yield to his intimidation and blackmail are targeted for looting and destruction by his gangs and goons.

“He is the biggest threat to national unity and the economy of our country. His utterances and criminal activities are being closely monitored by our security agencies, and we shall do everything to ensure that the people and their properties are protected.”

Murkomen’s remarks came amid an increasingly bitter exchange between the two leaders that has played out publicly over the past several days.

Earlier, Gachagua accused the Interior CS of sponsoring criminal gangs and demanded his resignation. Murkomen, in turn, alleged that Gachagua was the mastermind behind unrest witnessed in parts of the Mount Kenya region during recent protests.

Neither Gachagua nor Murkomen has publicly provided evidence to substantiate the allegations they have made against each other. The dispute continues to underscore widening political divisions within Kenya’s leadership as both sides trade accusations over security, governance and regional politics.
