Ruto’s UDA announces constitution overhaul and invites public feedback
Kenya’s ruling party has unveiled changes to its constitution and is calling on members across the country to submit their views before the amendments are adopted.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced amendments to its party constitution, inviting members to review the proposed changes and send in their feedback.
In a notice issued under Section 20(2) of the Political Parties Act, 2011, Secretary General Hassan Omar said a copy of the amended constitution has been published on the party’s official website for members to access.
The party is also encouraging members to submit written comments and proposals through its official email address as part of the consultation process.
“A copy of the amended constitution is available at the official Party website https://uda.ke. Any member with written submissions concerning the amendment to the constitution is invited to make their written submissions to the party using its official email hello@uda.ke,” Omar said.
The announcement comes as political parties continue reviewing their internal governance structures ahead of next year’s General Election.
According to UDA, the party is built on principles including good governance, equity, diversity, love, unity, freedom, justice, accountability, transparency and peace.
“The leadership of the party shall ensure a just and prosperous nation through good governance, nurturing the right political atmosphere for businesses and industries to thrive, developing human resources, fostering political stability and welfare of the people of Kenya,” the party stated on its website.
UDA’s symbol remains the wheelbarrow, which the party says represents “the value, dignity and respect of work in pursuit of an equitable society.”
Its official colours are yellow, black and green on a white background, while its slogan is “Kazi ni Kazi.”
The party is currently Kenya’s ruling political outfit and the largest member of the Kenya Kwanza coalition, led by President William Ruto.
Originally known as the Party of Development and Reforms (PDR), the movement rebranded as the United Democratic Alliance in December 2020 before rising to national prominence ahead of the 2022 General Election.
UDA went on to sponsor Ruto’s successful presidential campaign after his departure from the Jubilee Party and the formation of the Kenya Kwanza alliance.
Following the 2022 polls, the party secured the largest share of seats in both the National Assembly and the Senate, cementing its position as Kenya’s governing political party.
