Youth Under NYOTA Programme to Receive Ksh50,000 From This Month – Kindiki
Thousands of Kenyan youth will begin receiving Ksh50,000 this month under the government’s National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced.
Speaking in Kisii County on Thursday afternoon, Kindiki revealed that the disbursements will benefit young entrepreneurs across the country, with a total of Ksh28 billion already allocated to fund the initiative. The NYOTA programme, which is funded by the World Bank, seeks to tackle youth unemployment, income insecurity, and limited savings.
“We have a very big programme for the youth, both male and female; it is called NYOTA. We are giving money in all the wards across the country to support 70 businesses in each ward,” Kindiki stated.
According to the Deputy President, each of the 70 youth selected per ward will receive Ksh50,000 to support or expand their small-scale businesses. The initiative targets youth between the ages of 18 and 29 and is being implemented through the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA).
Kindiki emphasized that only registered youth-owned businesses will qualify for the funds, urging eligible youth to take advantage of what he termed as a “rare opportunity.”
“The government has released Ksh28 billion; starting this month, 70 businesses in each ward will be funded. Each youth will receive Ksh50,000 for expanding their businesses,” he added.
The NYOTA programme is a scaled-up version of the Kenya Youth Employment Opportunities Project (KYEOP) and aims to empower over 110,000 young Kenyans over a five-year period.
In addition to youth empowerment, the Deputy President noted that the government is also working on support measures for older Kenyans, including small-scale traders like mama mboga. “We have many interventions to support all businesses,” Kindiki assured.
The announcement follows the recent closure of the application window for NYOTA, which ended on May 15. With applications now closed, the government is expected to begin shortlisting successful applicants in preparation for the disbursement process.
As the implementation phase begins, the NYOTA programme marks a significant milestone in the government’s broader efforts to reduce unemployment and promote entrepreneurship among Kenya’s youth.
