We’re Assembling a Coalition to Send Ruto Home in 2027 – Eugene Wamalwa
Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has hinted at the formation of a formidable political coalition aiming to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking to NTV, Wamalwa revealed that the coalition will largely comprise veteran political figures who were instrumental in the election of former President Mwai Kibaki in 2002 under the then-opposition alliance. He noted that lessons from the past have prepared them for a united front, undeterred by any attempts to divide them.
“We’ve learnt our lessons. We know that he will try to divide us. Already there are those being prompted to go on their own, but we are assembling a team that will send Ruto home in the first round,” said Wamalwa.
He named key political figures already onboard, including National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua. Wamalwa referred to this alliance as the revival of the 2002 ‘NARC moment’, signaling a nostalgic and strategic comeback.
Other notable names linked to the coalition include Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and, surprisingly, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The group’s unity appears to rest on the shared goal of offering Kenyans a political alternative amid increasing economic pressure and high taxes.
“We want Kenyans to have hope. Though you might suffer under the heavy taxes. June is coming and there will be more taxes,” Wamalwa warned.
The Jubilee Party’s branch officials have already endorsed Matiang’i as their preferred presidential candidate. This positions him as a leading contender for the coalition’s presidential ticket, which is expected to stir internal competition within the broader Azimio coalition.
Matiang’i’s ambitions became clearer in 2023 when he signed a consultancy deal with Canadian lobbying firm Dickens & Madson. The agreement included an upfront payment of KSh8.4 million, followed by a retainer of KSh32.3 million to support his 2027 bid.
Meanwhile, Karua’s party has undergone a strategic transformation. NARC-Kenya rebranded to the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), targeting a more youthful demographic, especially Generation Z.
“NARC-Kenya, formed nearly 20 years ago, had become less familiar to younger voters. The transition to PLP is meant to revitalize its appeal and reaffirm its commitment to democratic ideals,” Karua explained.
She added that the party’s identity now includes a purple rose, replacing the traditional green, to symbolize love, friendship, and peace. The slogan for the rejuvenated movement is “Unite – Liberate.”
However, the coalition still faces a major hurdle—choosing a flagbearer. With several interested candidates, including Wamalwa himself, questions remain on who will ultimately fly the coalition’s flag against Ruto in 2027.
As the political landscape takes shape, Kenyans will be closely watching whether this alliance can solidify and offer a viable alternative to the Kenya Kwanza government.
