Weatherman Issues Heavy Rain Alert as Kenya Braces for Intense Downpour

Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for several parts of the country, warning of potential floods and hazardous weather conditions starting Sunday, March 9.

In a statement on Saturday evening, Kenya Met Director Dr. David Gikungu cautioned that the rains could exceed 20mm in 24 hours, with some areas experiencing intensified downpours of over 30mm on March 10 before gradually subsiding on March 11.

Regions Likely to Be Affected

According to the advisory, the heavy rains will impact multiple counties, including:

  • Lake Victoria Basin & Western Kenya: Kisumu, Siaya, Busia, Migori, Homabay, Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, and Kisii.
  • Rift Valley & Central Kenya: Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Narok, Nandi, Trans-Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
  • Other Affected Regions: Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Machakos, Kajiado, Turkana, Marsabit, and West Pokot.

Residents in these areas have been urged to prepare for possible flooding, flash floods, and reduced visibility on the roads.

Safety Precautions Advised

Dr. Gikungu emphasized the need for caution, warning the public against seeking shelter under trees or near metallic structures such as grilled windows during storms, to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.

“People are advised to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas. Further updates will be issued if there are any changes to the forecast,” he stated.

Start of the Long Rains Season

The heavy rains mark the beginning of Kenya’s long rains season (March-May), the primary wet period for most parts of the country. Traditionally, April records the highest rainfall, often peaking around Easter.

Kenya Met predicts that this season will bring over 300mm of rainfall in regions such as Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Central Highlands (including Nairobi), and parts of the Coastal Strip.

With the rains expected to intensify, authorities urge residents to take necessary precautions, especially those in flood-prone areas.
