Long Rains Season in Full Swing
April typically marks the peak of Kenya’s ‘Long Rains’ season. The Meteorological Department says it expects near-to-above-average rainfall across most regions in the coming weeks.
“In areas such as the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, and parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, above-normal rainfall is anticipated, occasionally accompanied by storms,” the Met Office stated.
The March-April-May (MAM) rains have already begun in some areas, with the onset marked by a wet spell of at least 20mm over three consecutive days and no extended dry spells within the following three weeks. For Northern Kenya, rainfall of at least 10mm over three days is considered the onset of the rainy season.
The peak of the rains in the coastal region is expected in May.
Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks associated with flooding and other rain-related hazards.
