Wave of Grisly Killings Shocks Western Kenya as Thugs Hack Two Guards at Maseno Market
A fresh wave of brutal killings has left residents of western Kenya gripped with fear after two night guards were savagely murdered by suspected thugs at Maseno Market in Kisumu County.
According to police reports, the victims—identified as Amos Kwanzu, 41, and Elphas Mushiri, 45—were on duty at the market on the morning of May 7 when they were attacked by unknown assailants wielding sharp weapons. Both suffered deep head wounds consistent with panga attacks.
Oddly, investigators say the motive behind the gruesome double murder remains unclear. No valuables were taken, and all nearby business premises remained untouched, ruling out robbery as an immediate motive.
“The scene was intact. Nothing was stolen,” a police source told Nairobian, adding that they suspect a targeted hit rather than a burglary gone wrong.
The bodies of the two guards were transferred to a local mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the attack. As of press time, no arrests had been made, but police say a manhunt is underway.
A String of Murders
The Maseno killings are just the latest in a string of disturbing murders reported across the country in recent days.
In Eldoret Town’s West Market area, police are probing the death of an unidentified woman believed to be around 30 years old. Her body was discovered by the roadside with visible injuries to her mouth, neck, and head—indications of a violent struggle.
Police have yet to identify the woman or determine the motive behind the murder. Her body is being preserved at a local morgue pending autopsy.
Meanwhile, in Kitui County’s Mwingi Game Reserve, detectives are investigating the chilling murder of a 16-year-old herdsboy whose body was discovered in a pool of blood with deep panga cuts to the head and neck.
According to authorities, the teen had gone missing while grazing livestock inside the reserve. His brutalized body was found hours later. Officers plan to interview reserve management as part of their probe.
Rising Insecurity Concerns
The cluster of killings has sparked fears among residents and raised questions about public safety, especially in rural areas where law enforcement is often stretched thin.
Community members are calling for increased night patrols, the deployment of more officers, and installation of surveillance equipment in open market areas and reserves.
As investigations continue, the public is being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may help in the apprehension of the killers.
