University Lecturers Issue 7-Day Strike Notice Over Unfulfilled CBA
The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has issued a seven-day strike notice to the government over what it terms as persistent failure to honour Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).
Speaking on Wednesday, UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga accused the government of ignoring negotiated and court-registered CBAs, saying lecturers will withdraw services across all public universities starting September 17 if the matter is not resolved.
“CBA arrears have accumulated to KSh 3.27 billion. The court had issued a directive for more funds to be allocated, but the government has not complied. We expected the monies to be paid before the onset of the September term,” Wasonga said.
UASU is also demanding the immediate negotiation of the 2025/2026 CBA, noting that other education sector unions have already secured agreements and benefits.
“The Ministry of Education has been playing PR, saying ‘we are going to pay.’ We will respond in the same style — the dons are back on the streets,” Wasonga warned.
The notice comes barely a day after Moi University lecturers suspended their strike following an agreement with the university council, which included the withdrawal of redundancy letters and fresh commitments to resolve disputes.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, who in January inaugurated a new council for Moi University, has insisted that reforms are underway to restore order in institutions plagued by mismanagement.
With 41 universities backing the strike notice, the looming shutdown threatens to paralyze higher education nationwide unless the government moves swiftly to address the lecturers’ grievances.
