Ukraine Ready for 30-Day Ceasefire as US Pushes Russia to Respond
Ukraine has announced its willingness to accept a US-backed proposal for an immediate 30-day ceasefire, pending Russia’s agreement. The move, seen as a step toward ending the ongoing conflict, was confirmed after peace talks held today.
Ceasefire Proposal on the Table
The ceasefire plan, which allows for an extension by mutual agreement, is contingent on Russia’s acceptance and implementation. Ukraine’s government emphasized that the decision aligns with its commitment to peace while ensuring the protection of national interests.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Washington is now waiting for Russia’s response. Speaking to reporters, he stated, “The ball is in their court,” and assured that the US would present the proposal to Moscow. Rubio also reiterated that US President Donald Trump is eager to see an end to the war.
Kyiv Stresses a ‘Just Peace’
Andriy Yermak, a top aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky, shared insights from the Ukrainian delegation’s discussions in Saudi Arabia. Posting on social media, Yermak highlighted that Kyiv prioritizes securing a “just peace” and thanked the US and Saudi officials for facilitating constructive dialogue.
Minerals Deal Not Part of Talks
Despite speculation, Rubio clarified that negotiations did not include discussions on a rare minerals deal between the US and Ukraine. He explained that the agreement remains under negotiation by treasury officials from both nations, with presidents from both sides pushing for its finalization.
Will Russia Accept the Ceasefire?
With Ukraine on board, the focus now shifts to Russia’s response. Rubio stressed the urgency of ending hostilities, stating, “People are dying today, they died yesterday, and without a ceasefire, they will die tomorrow.” He added that the ceasefire offer extends beyond previous proposals by President Zelensky, covering not just land operations but also military actions in the sea and air.
While hopes for a ceasefire remain, the world awaits Moscow’s next move. If Russia rejects the proposal, Rubio suggested that it would be clear “who is the impediment to peace.”
