Uganda’s Muhoozi Kainerugaba Slams Kenya Over ‘Failed’ Haiti Mission
Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sharply criticised Kenya’s involvement in the ongoing United Nations-backed Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti, calling it a failure and proposing Uganda as a better alternative to lead the operation.
In a series of strongly worded posts on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Gen Muhoozi claimed Uganda’s People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) could accomplish in a month what Kenyan forces have struggled to do in nearly two years.
“It would take us one month to capture Port-au-Prince,” Muhoozi wrote, referring to Haiti’s capital. He went on to assert that Uganda was prepared to “rescue” their Kenyan counterparts from what he called a failing mission.
The general further urged the United Nations to revoke Kenya’s leadership role and instead negotiate with Uganda to take over anti-gang operations in Haiti. “The Kenyans have failed after nearly 2 years…that’s what we expected. The UN is welcome to offer us favourable terms,” he added.
Kenya currently leads the MSS mission, which was launched to support Haiti’s police forces in restoring order amid widespread gang violence. As of May 2025, Kenya had deployed 800 police officers to Port-au-Prince and other hotspots, and the mission recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, citing progress in reclaiming schools, hospitals, and the main airport from gang control.
Muhoozi’s remarks come shortly after United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres raised concerns over the deteriorating security in Haiti, warning that the MSS mission may not achieve lasting impact due to limited resources and logistical challenges.
The timing of Muhoozi’s criticism—just ten days before the mission’s official term ends—has raised questions about regional military politics and Uganda’s ambitions on the global security stage.
Muhoozi, who is also the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, is no stranger to controversy. In 2022, he sparked a diplomatic incident after tweeting that it would take the UPDF two weeks to capture Nairobi, prompting an official apology to Kenya from his father.
Kenyan authorities and the MSS mission leadership have not yet issued an official response to Muhoozi’s latest comments.
