UDA Dismisses Rigathi Gachagua’s Resignation, Declares It Null and Void
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has dismissed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s resignation from the party, claiming it holds no legal or political weight.
Just hours after Gachagua announced his exit from UDA in a strongly worded letter, the party released a counterstatement declaring his resignation “null and void,” citing that his impeachment and subsequent removal as Deputy Party Leader had already terminated his party membership.
“The ruling party, United Democratic Alliance (UDA), officially removed one, Rigathi Gachagua, as its Deputy Party Leader, which automatically revoked his membership,” the party stated. “Today’s long paragraphs and ‘exit’ from the party amount to mere theatrics, hence, inconsequential!”
UDA added that Gachagua should have directed his resignation to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), which legally oversees political party memberships.
In a previous letter dated January 22, 2025, addressed to the ORPP, UDA had formally announced Gachagua’s replacement, naming current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy Party Leader following a decision made at the NEC meeting on November 11, 2024.
Gachagua’s resignation, coming seven months after his impeachment, included a scathing rebuke of the Kenya Kwanza government. In his letter, he accused the administration of betraying its manifesto and replacing its development pillars with what he described as “a retrogressive philosophy.”
He criticized the five main pillars of the Kenya Kwanza blueprint — Agriculture, MSMEs, Housing, Healthcare, and the Digital Economy — branding them “centres of crime with no tangible gains.”
“By a copy of this letter, you are notified that I have officially resigned from the UDA Party with immediate effect,” Gachagua stated, expressing disillusionment over the government’s failure to address key issues in agriculture, healthcare, and housing.
This clash marks another deepening rift in the ruling coalition, with political analysts speculating on the broader implications for UDA and the future of opposition politics.
