Two Dead, Three Injured in Nakuru Accident Near Gioto Dumpsite

Two people have died on the spot and three others are nursing serious injuries following a head-on collision involving two vehicles at Gioto dumpsite in Nakuru Town West constituency.

The Saturday night accident occurred along the Nakuru-Kabarak-Eldama Ravine road. According to Nakuru Town West Subcounty Police Commander Stephen Kirui, the crash happened when a Prado vehicle heading towards Kabarak attempted to overtake recklessly, colliding head-on with an oncoming Nissan Siesta.

“The accident happened along Nakuru-Kabarak-Eldama Ravine road where we lost two lives instantly. It’s a very unfortunate accident that should not have happened,” said Kirui. The deceased, a man and a woman, were both in the Nissan vehicle.

Three other occupants, including an American national who was in the Prado, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital. The bodies of the deceased were moved to the facility’s mortuary.

Police have towed both vehicles to Kaptembwa Police Station as investigations continue.

In a related incident earlier on the same day, another accident occurred in the Free Area along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway. Njau Kamau, the driver of a lorry involved in the crash, reported hitting another vehicle that had suddenly braked. Kamau, who sustained head injuries, said he lost control of the vehicle while transporting assorted plastic goods.

Local resident Jessie Njoroge attributed the rising number of accidents in the area to the numerous road bumps, which he claimed disrupt traffic flow and contribute to collisions.

“The government ought to relook at these bumps because they’re heavily affecting vehicle movement here, causing unnecessary accidents,” he said.

Njoroge also called on the highways authority to improve road markings and signage for better visibility and safety. “From Limuru through to Timboroa, there’s a need for renewed road markings to enhance safety for both drivers and road users,” he added.

Commander Kirui urged all road users to exercise extra caution to prevent further loss of life.
