Turkey Pledges Support for Somalia in Fight Against Al-Shabaab
Turkey has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Somalia in its battle against Al-Shabaab, committing to increased military aid, economic assistance, and diplomatic backing.
The pledge was made during a high-level meeting between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on March 27, 2025. The discussions, held at the Presidential Complex, underscored Turkey’s critical role as a strategic ally in Somalia’s quest for stability. President Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s commitment to standing by Somalia, framing their partnership as a collective mission against terrorism.
“Turkey will never waver in its commitment to Somalia’s peace and progress. Our military and economic support is a testament to our belief in Somalia’s future—a future free from the shadow of terror,” Erdogan stated.
Strengthening Military and Economic Cooperation
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud hailed Turkey as a “true brother” in Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab, expressing gratitude for Ankara’s steadfast support.
“With Turkey’s backing, we are stronger than ever in our mission to reclaim our nation from Al-Shabaab and build a thriving Somalia,” President Hassan said.
The leaders discussed various areas of cooperation, including counterterrorism, trade, and development. Turkey pledged to enhance military training for Somali forces and boost intelligence-sharing to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s networks. Additionally, both nations committed to increasing investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and education to improve the well-being of Somali citizens.
Bolstering Somalia’s Defense Capabilities
A crucial aspect of the meeting centered on deepening defense cooperation, with plans to fortify Somalia’s border security and military capabilities. According to Somalia’s Dalsan Media, President Hassan is expected to return to Mogadishu and immediately visit the frontlines, underscoring his administration’s hands-on approach to tackling the extremist threat.
Turkey’s involvement in Somalia dates back to the early 2010s, beginning with humanitarian aid during the 2011 famine. Over the years, Ankara has played a significant role in Somalia’s reconstruction, funding roads, hospitals, and schools while maintaining one of its largest embassies in Mogadishu.
“Turkey’s support extends beyond aid—it’s a long-term partnership. We are assisting Somalia in achieving its goals, from training troops to rebuilding communities,” a senior official from Turkey’s Communications Directorate stated.
A Critical Moment in Somalia’s Fight Against Terrorism
The meeting between the two leaders comes at a crucial time as Somalia intensifies its fight against Al-Shabaab. President Hassan’s anticipated return to the battlefield signals the urgency of the situation and his administration’s dedication to confronting the extremist threat firsthand.
With Turkey’s continued support, Somalia moves closer to securing its nation, fostering development, and ensuring a future free from terror.
