Tragedy in Limuru: 12 Killed in Two Separate Road Accidents

Tragedy struck Limuru in Kiambu County as twelve people lost their lives in two separate road accidents that occurred within less than 24 hours along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

In the most recent incident on Friday morning, a 14-seater matatu belonging to Kijabeline Sacco veered off the road at Kamandura junction and plunged down a steep slope, rolling several times before coming to a halt. The matatu was en route from Nairobi to Kijabe town.

According to Limuru OCPD Mary Gachie, five passengers died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment. Four survivors are currently in critical condition and undergoing treatment at Tigoni Hospital.

The accident occurred at around 8:00 a.m., approximately one kilometre from the scene of a fatal crash that took place on Thursday evening.

In that earlier incident, a private vehicle is reported to have suffered a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control. Three passengers died instantly, while two more later passed away while receiving medical care.

The wreckage from both accidents has been moved to Tigoni Police Station as investigations continue. Authorities are probing the causes of the crashes, with a focus on vehicle maintenance and road conditions.

The twin tragedies have sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations and vehicle inspections, especially along major highways.

Residents have expressed shock and grief, urging the government to erect more safety barriers and improve signage in accident-prone zones such as Kamandura.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives. These repeated accidents point to a bigger issue in road safety that needs immediate attention,” said a local resident.

The government is yet to issue a formal statement on the incidents, but police have vowed to intensify patrols and surveillance in the area to prevent further accidents.
