Tragedy in Ang’ata Barikoi: Five Shot Dead in Land Protest Clashes

Narok County has been plunged into mourning after five people were fatally shot in Ang’ata Barikoi, Kilgoris, during a protest over a disputed 6,300-acre piece of land. The incident occurred on the afternoon of Monday, April 28, 2025, when residents took to the streets to demonstrate against alleged land grabbing.

According to witnesses, tensions flared when security officers confronted the protestors, resulting in a deadly exchange that left five individuals dead and several others injured. The victims were reportedly demanding justice and clarity over land ownership, which they claimed has been in the community’s hands for decades.

Footage shared online showed residents chanting “Haki yetu” (“It is our right”) while holding placards, leaves, and makeshift banners. Others blocked roads using stones and broken furniture, visibly enraged by what they termed as “state-sponsored brutality.”

Senator Ledama Olekina condemned the killings, vowing to stand with the people of Ang’ata Barikoi. “I am deeply saddened by the reported news of the killings. My heartfelt condolences to all affected. No one can take your land from you,” he stated. Olekina announced plans to visit the area and support residents in their quest for justice.

Narok Governor Patrick Keturet Ole Ntutu also responded, confirming via Facebook that both his office and county security teams were actively handling the situation. “I have been extensively and sufficiently briefed on the security situation. My team is currently engaged in high-level consultations,” his statement read.

Emotional scenes were captured at the Ang’ata Barikoi Health Centre, where the bodies of the deceased were taken. Local activist Johana Kamilan was seen weeping after viewing the victims, highlighting the deep emotional toll the incident has taken on the community.

Despite the outcry, by press time, the National Police Service (NPS), Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had not issued any official statement.

The silence from national authorities, coupled with the disturbing imagery shared online, has only fueled calls for transparency and accountability. Pressure is now mounting on the government to investigate the killings and bring those responsible to justice.

This tragedy has once again put the spotlight on Kenya’s recurring land conflicts and the often-violent state responses that follow. Residents of Ang’ata Barikoi continue to demand answers—and justice.
