Three Killed in Matatu-Boda Boda Collision on Mwea-Embu Highway
Three people lost their lives on Wednesday morning in a tragic road accident involving a matatu and a motorcycle along the Mwea-Embu highway in Kirinyaga County.
The crash occurred at the Research area around 10 a.m., claiming the lives of a boda boda rider and his two female pillion passengers. All three died on the spot due to the severity of the impact.
Preliminary police investigations suggest that the motorcycle, which was en route to Makutano, veered off its lane and collided head-on with a matatu traveling in the opposite direction toward Ngurubani.
“The impact was severe. All three—the rider and the two women passengers—died on the spot,” police confirmed.
Michael Njue, the matatu driver, told reporters that he was driving at a speed of 60 to 70 km/h from Nairobi to Meru when the motorcycle suddenly appeared in his lane.
“I was driving at about 60 to 70 km/h when the motorcycle with two passengers hit me head-on,” Njue recounted.
Eyewitnesses say the force of the collision was so strong that the motorcycle became lodged beneath the front of the matatu.
“It is unfortunate that a man and two women have lost their lives in this morning’s accident,” said local resident Peter Wanjohi, who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.
Wang’uru Police Base Commander Jamilah Murugu confirmed the incident, stating that the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Kerugoya Mortuary for identification and postmortem examinations.
Both vehicles involved—the matatu and the motorcycle—were towed to Sagana Police Station for further inspection as investigations into the accident continue.
The Nairobian continues to urge motorists and boda boda riders to observe road safety regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
