Three Arrested After Shoe Thrown at President Ruto During Migori Tour
President William Ruto narrowly escaped injury on Sunday after a shoe was hurled at him during a public address in Kehancha, Kuria West, Migori County. The incident occurred during a rally on his developmental tour of the region.
As the President engaged residents on matters of reducing farming input costs, an unidentified object—later confirmed to be a shoe—was thrown in his direction, narrowly missing him. Security personnel swiftly moved in to shield the Head of State, while Ruto briefly paused before resuming his address.
The dramatic moment was captured on video, showing the President mid-sentence—”We will reduce the cost of…”—before being abruptly interrupted by the flying object. Despite the interruption, President Ruto maintained composure and continued with his planned program.
Police officers later confirmed the arrest of three suspects linked to the incident. A senior officer, speaking anonymously, revealed that the attack is believed to have been politically motivated and may have stemmed from rivalry between local Members of Parliament.
However, according to reports, President Ruto ordered the release of the individuals arrested at the scene as the investigation into the main perpetrator continues. Authorities stated that they are closing in on a key suspect believed to have played a central role in the incident.
UDA Migori County Chairman Byron Ogiga condemned the act, stating, “I condemn the act in the strongest terms possible, especially at a time when the Kuria community is lobbying for county status. Such actions risk undermining the development agenda the president is championing and could jeopardise future support.”
The attempted assault has ignited debate across the country, with many Kenyans expressing concern over the security breach. While some online users condemned the attack as disrespectful and reckless, others cited frustration over rising economic and political challenges as a possible cause.
Earlier in the day, Ruto had attended an Interdenominational Prayer Service at Kadika Primary School in Suna East. He also opened the Suna East Sub County Office and laid the foundation stone for Suna West Technical and Vocational College.
“We are strengthening our local administration to ensure it is fully equipped to serve the people efficiently,” said Ruto. “This new college will expand technical training opportunities for youth in the region.”
The President concluded his day in Kuria West, where he broke ground for the 298-unit Kehancha Affordable Housing Project. “We are implementing a transformative development agenda that will ensure that no part of our country is marginalised or left behind,” he added.
Investigations into the shoe-throwing incident are ongoing. Authorities have collected evidence and are analyzing footage to identify all those involved. No injuries were reported, and President Ruto continued his tour without further incidents.
