Ten Police Officers Arrested After Fatal Shooting in Nakuru’s London Estate
Ten police officers have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a civilian during a heated confrontation in London Estate, Nakuru. The incident, which has triggered widespread public outrage, is now under investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
Eyewitnesses claim the unrest began when officers attempted to arrest three young men. “Maafande walikuja baze, wakashika vijana watatu. Hao vijana hawakukubali kuingia kwa gari… wakashoot juu,” recounted a resident, alleging that officers opened fire after the suspects resisted arrest.
The victim, identified by locals as Dan, was reportedly shot in the mouth during the chaos. “Wametuzoea… wamemshoot kwa mdomo. Tunaomba watupee mwili ya mwenzetu, mwili ya Dan,” cried a woman at the scene, demanding the release of the body to the family.
Jane Nafula, another resident, decried what she described as repeated police brutality: “Haki iko wapi kwa hii Kenya? Tunaskia uchungu kama wananchi.”
Nakuru County Police Commander Michael Mwaura confirmed the arrest of the officers involved. “All officers have been subjected to investigations. The firearms have been taken for ballistic analysis. All officers are under arrest,” he stated.
He added that an identification parade will be held on Tuesday to determine which officer fired the fatal shot. One police officer was also injured during the incident and is receiving treatment in hospital.
According to Mwaura, the incident stemmed from a routine patrol operation. “Officers were patrolling. They arrested a youth for peddling bhang. After arresting him, he claimed to know a dealer. When they reached the dealer’s location, that’s when the altercation broke out.”
Following the shooting, angry youths stormed Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital, disrupting services for several hours, highlighting the rising tension in the community.
As the IPOA and police continue investigations, the public awaits justice and accountability in what has become the latest flashpoint in Kenya’s ongoing conversation around police use of force.
