Temperatures to Drop to 1°C Thursday Night in Nairobi, Rain Expected in Several Regions – Kenya Met

Nairobi residents should brace for a chilly Thursday night as the Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted temperatures to plummet to as low as 1°C in the capital and surrounding counties. The low temperature comes amid a week of widespread rainfall expected across many regions in the country.

In its latest update on Monday, May 26, the Met Department confirmed that between Tuesday, May 27, and Saturday, May 31, areas in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Rift Valley, and the Coast will experience rainfall.

Counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi will experience cloudy mornings with sunny intervals throughout the week. However, Thursday is expected to bring rain to some areas. Afternoon and night showers are likely, except on Friday night, which will remain partly cloudy.

Temperatures in these counties will range between 28°C (maximum) and 1°C (minimum), with Thursday night being the coldest.

In Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland Tana River, residents can expect mostly sunny mornings and afternoons, with possible showers on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Nights will be partly cloudy. Temperatures are expected to vary between 31°C (maximum) and 12°C (minimum).

Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River will receive showers in a few places across mornings, afternoons, and nights, except for Wednesday night, which will remain partly cloudy. Maximum temperatures are expected to hit 32°C with minimums around 24°C.

Counties in the Lake Victoria Basin and Central Rift such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and several Rift Valley counties including Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Nakuru will experience showers during the afternoon and night throughout the week. Morning sunny intervals are expected on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. These areas will see temperatures ranging from 29°C (maximum) to 10°C (minimum).

Turkana and Samburu counties will remain sunny during the day and partly cloudy at night. Daytime temperatures are forecasted at 36°C while nighttime lows will drop to 11°C.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has also issued a wind advisory, warning of strong winds exceeding 25 knots (approximately 12.86 m/s) expected to affect the Coast, South-Eastern Lowlands, and North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya.
