Teargas, Running Battles as Police Disperse Youths in Roysambu
Roysambu was a scene of chaos on Sunday as police engaged in running battles with a group of youths protesting against Jesus Winner Ministry. The unrest erupted following the church’s acceptance of a Sh20 million donation from President William Ruto, a move that sparked outrage among some members of the public.
Law enforcement officers were deployed in anticipation of the protest, positioning themselves strategically around the church. However, tensions escalated when a large group of demonstrators began assembling at the Roysambu roundabout, seemingly preparing to march towards the place of worship. As the crowd grew, police intervened, using tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, sending them fleeing in different directions.
The demonstration was primarily organized through social media under the hashtag #OccupyJesusWinner, with calls for protestors to physically occupy the church premises as a means of expressing their dissatisfaction. In addition to the street action, some individuals reportedly bombarded Jesus Winner Ministry Bishop Edward Mwai with offensive messages, further fueling the controversy.
During Sunday’s service, Bishop Mwai addressed the congregation, alleging that certain individuals had orchestrated the protest and incited youths to disrupt the church proceedings. Without mentioning names, he suggested that political or personal interests were at play.
“People I know very well used them and even sent some here today. Someday, they will know there is God’s presence at this altar. May God forgive our children who are being used in such a manner,” said Bishop Mwai.
He also extended forgiveness to those who had insulted him over the donation, stating, “I forgive all those who have insulted me and called me names and leave it to God. May He forgive them.”
Despite the intense confrontations, there were no immediate reports of serious injuries. Authorities remain on high alert, monitoring the situation to prevent any further incidents as debates over the church’s financial engagements continue to stir public discourse.
