Sudan Army Recaptures Presidential Palace in Major Blow to RSF
In a significant victory, Sudan’s army has recaptured the presidential palace in Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after a fierce battle. This marks a turning point in the nearly two-year-long conflict that has ravaged the country.
A Crushing Defeat for RSF
Army spokesman Nabil Abdallah confirmed the triumph on state television, stating that their forces “completely destroyed the enemy’s fighters and equipment, and seized large quantities of weapons.”
The RSF had taken over the palace in April 2023 when war erupted between the two factions. Since then, central Khartoum has become a battleground, with intense fighting in recent months as the army made strategic advances.
Earlier this week, the army announced it had successfully merged its forces from the north and south, trapping RSF fighters in the capital.
Key Symbol of Power Reclaimed
According to military analysts, the recapture of the Republican Palace is a devastating blow to the RSF, which had used the historic building as a stronghold for elite forces and weapon storage.
“With the army entering the Republican Palace, which means control of central Khartoum, the militia has lost its elite forces,” a military expert told AFP, requesting anonymity for safety reasons.
A military source added, “Now the army has destroyed equipment, killed a number of their forces, and seized control of one of the most important supply centers in Khartoum.”
The Tide is Turning
The army has been regaining territory steadily, first reclaiming central Sudan before shifting focus to Khartoum. In January, troops broke an RSF siege on the General Command headquarters, allowing them to regroup and encircle paramilitary fighters in the city center.
With RSF fighters now retreating into buildings in central Khartoum, the army remains determined to achieve complete victory.
“Progress will continue on all fronts until every inch of our country is purged of the militia and its supporters,” Abdallah vowed.
Hope Amidst a Devastating Conflict
The war has killed tens of thousands, displaced over 12 million people, and triggered one of the world’s worst hunger and displacement crises.
On social media, videos circulated of soldiers celebrating inside the palace, exchanging congratulations. While AFP has not yet verified the footage, the recapture of the presidential palace stands as a beacon of hope for a war-weary nation.
As Sudan’s army tightens its grip on Khartoum, all eyes are on what comes next in this brutal conflict.
