Strict Movement Rules Announced for Madaraka Day in Homa Bay
HOMA BAY — Motorists and boda boda riders in Homa Bay County have been issued with strict movement and parking directives ahead of the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled for Sunday, June 1, 2025.
The national event, set to be held at Raila Odinga Stadium, is expected to attract over 15,000 guests, including President William Ruto, visiting Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar, and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking to the press on Saturday, Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa announced that elaborate traffic management and security plans had been put in place to ensure the smooth flow of activities and public safety.
“We have detailed plans for crowd control, traffic diversion, emergency response, and designated parking areas to ensure the safety of all participants,” Mworoa stated.
Motorists traveling from Kisumu and Kendu Bay heading to Mbita, Oyugis, Rongo, Kisii, and Migori have been advised to divert at Olare to Imbo–Rodi. Conversely, those from Kisii, Migori, and Oyugis heading toward Kisumu should use Rodi to Imbo, rejoining the main road at Olare.
Vehicles coming into Homa Bay from Rodi but not attending the celebrations will be diverted at the Kodoyo/Mbita junction to the main matatu stage to minimize congestion around the stadium and central areas.
Parking zones for the event include Asego Comprehensive School, KMTC, Tourist Hotel, Got Rabuor Primary and Secondary Schools, and SDA Central Church. Buses will park at Homa Bay Primary School, while government vehicles will use the Homa Bay Police Station and County Commissioner’s office compounds.
All roads leading to the Raila Odinga Stadium, the State Lodge, and the County Commissioner’s office will be closed to the general public, with access limited strictly to dignitaries.
Boda boda operators have been directed to park at the main matatu stage alongside matatus. The goal is to reduce congestion and improve access control around the main venue.
Mworoa confirmed that law enforcement agencies, including the National Police Service, the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), and emergency response teams, will be fully deployed across the town to manage traffic, ensure crowd safety, and respond to emergencies.
Homa Bay leaders have hailed the opportunity to host this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, saying it signals the county’s growing national importance and its readiness for future development.
