‘Stop Media Theatrics!’ DCI Amin Slams Gachagua Over Assassination Plot Claims
Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohammed Amin has publicly rebuked former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of staging media theatrics following explosive claims of an assassination plot against him.
Gachagua had alleged that there were multiple attempts to end his life and harm his family, following his removal from office in October 2024. However, DCI Amin insists that the former DP must follow the legal process by reporting the matter to the police rather than making unverified allegations in the media.
“If the former Deputy President has an issue — any matter concerning a threat to his life or property — he should report to the nearest police station and not engage in media theatrics,” said Amin. “Any report that comes, just like any other citizen’s, will be investigated to its logical conclusion.”
Amin echoed sentiments from the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, and urged Gachagua to cooperate with the proper legal channels if he feels threatened.
Gachagua’s Explosive Claims
Earlier this week, Gachagua addressed a letter to IG Kanja, claiming that his life and the safety of his family were in grave danger. He accused the police chief of deliberately withdrawing his security detail as part of what he described as “a thought-out scheme and backward conspiracy” to leave him exposed to organized criminal gangs.
He further alleged that National Intelligence Service (NIS) operatives had been trailing him and his family using unmarked vehicles with clandestine number plates. “This is an affront to my right to privacy,” Gachagua wrote in the letter.
The former DP also claimed that there had been attempts to attack his residences in Nairobi, Nyeri, and elsewhere by individuals allegedly known to the police — or in some cases, with the police’s direct complicity.
IG Kanja Responds
Inspector General Kanja, through a statement issued by National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, dismissed Gachagua’s allegations and reiterated the police service’s commitment to protecting all citizens impartially.
“The attention of the National Police Service has been drawn to a letter allegedly authored by Hon. Rigathi Gachagua,” the statement read. “The Service wishes to reaffirm its role in promoting and safeguarding national security for all Kenyans, residents, and visitors.”
Nyaga advised Gachagua to directly liaise with police officers if he requires any additional security arrangements. He also emphasized that Kenya’s security situation remains stable, with law enforcement officers on high alert to prevent any criminal threats.
As political tensions rise, Gachagua’s claims have sparked debate, with some viewing them as a cry for help and others as a calculated political move. Regardless, both the DCI and IG have made it clear — the path to justice begins at the police station, not on the podium.
