Shock in Sotik as Man Arrested for Slaughtering Dog, Selling the Meat
Residents of Sotik in Bomet County were left stunned on Friday after police arrested a man accused of slaughtering a dog and attempting to sell its meat to unsuspecting members of the public.
According to police reports, the suspect, Richard Kigen, 38, was apprehended following a tip-off received by Sotik Township Assistant Chief, Madam Emma.
“She reported the matter to Sotik Police Station after concerned locals raised alarm over suspicious meat being circulated in the Chemagel and Kimase areas,” the police stated.
Police launched an immediate operation that led to Kigen’s arrest and the recovery of approximately 15 kilograms of dog meat. The meat, packed in plastic gunny bags, was allegedly intended for sale as regular meat.
Upon interrogation, the suspect admitted to the offense, confessing that he had planned to distribute the meat without revealing its origin.
The County Veterinary Department has since taken samples of the meat for further analysis to aid in the ongoing investigation.
Kigen is expected to face charges under the Meat Control Act, CAP 356, for slaughtering an undeclared animal, as well as charges related to animal cruelty.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to buy meat only from licensed and approved sources.
Police investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
