Several Injured After Guardian Bus Overturns on Kisii-Kaplong Road
Several passengers were rushed to hospital on Sunday morning after a Guardian Angel bus overturned along the notorious Kisii-Kaplong road.
Witnesses say the accident occurred as the bus driver swerved sharply to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming lorry. The Guardian bus, which was ferrying travelers to different destinations within Kisii County — with Nyamarambe in Gucha South Sub-County as its final stop — lost control and rolled over onto its side.
According to initial reports, the driver had been overtaking another vehicle when he suddenly encountered the lorry barreling towards him. In a desperate attempt to avoid a deadly crash, he veered right, but the bus skidded and flipped over.
Good Samaritans at the scene acted swiftly, helping passengers out of the wreckage and rushing the injured to nearby hospitals, including Sotik Sub-County Hospital. Luckily, no fatalities were reported, though several individuals sustained serious injuries.
Police officers responded quickly and cordoned off the accident scene as investigations began. Authorities have warned that some survivors may have suffered internal injuries and are being closely monitored in hospital.
The Kisii-Kaplong stretch has earned a grim reputation in recent months, with a rising number of road accidents sparking safety concerns. In March alone, five people lost their lives in two separate crashes involving a matatu and a private car.
Calls for urgent road expansion and redesign have grown louder, with local leaders urging the government to fast-track promised improvements. Officials previously committed to upgrading the narrow road but cited budget constraints as a reason for delays.
As the number of accidents continues to climb, residents and motorists alike are demanding swift action to prevent further tragedies.
