Seven Killed After Lorry Rams Into Matatu, Traders in Nyamira

At least seven people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident involving a lorry transporting tea leaves and a public service matatu at Kijauri Market in Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County.

According to eyewitnesses, the lorry lost control as it descended a steep stretch near the market. The vehicle veered off the road, ramming into the matatu and plowing through a group of traders operating roadside stalls.

Six people died on the spot, while a seventh victim succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Summit Hospital. Several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to different medical facilities within Borabu Constituency.

The bodies of the deceased have been moved to St. Joseph Nyansiongo Hospital mortuary for identification and postmortem.

Authorities have launched investigations into the cause of the accident, with preliminary reports pointing to possible brake failure. Traffic police are working with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to assess the condition of the road and the vehicle.

Borabu MP Ben Momanyi has expressed condolences to the affected families, urging the government to prioritize safety audits for heavy commercial vehicles and implement stricter enforcement of road regulations.

“It is heartbreaking to lose so many lives in one morning. We demand answers, and we must act now to prevent future tragedies,” he said.

As investigations continue, police have warned that the death toll could rise as more victims remain hospitalized in critical condition.
