Scenes at Nairobi Hospital After MP Charles Were Shot Dead

Nairobi Hospital became the center of national attention on Wednesday evening following the tragic death of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were.

The MP was shot dead by unknown gunmen riding on a motorbike near City Mortuary along Ngong Road shortly after leaving Parliament. He was reportedly stuck in traffic when the attackers smashed his car window and opened fire at close range.

Were was rushed to Nairobi Hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The shocking incident triggered an outpouring of grief and a heavy presence of top government officials and political leaders at the hospital.

Among the notable figures spotted at the hospital were:

  • DCI Director Mohamed Amin
  • Nairobi Police Commander George Seda
  • PS Interior Raymond Omollo
  • Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga
  • Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga
  • Dagoretti MP Beatrice Elachi

Leaders mourned Were’s untimely demise, describing it as a chilling act of violence that has shaken the nation.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said, “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, the MP for Kasipul. I had the privilege of serving with him in Parliament, where he always advocated for the people of Kasipul with clarity and conviction. Those who planned and executed this heinous crime must face the full force of the law.”

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi recounted a chilling final conversation with Were just hours before his death. “I was with my colleague just this afternoon in Parliament. We chatted, laughed and he told me, ‘I need a conversation with you, mambo si mazuri’—his exact words. Five hours later, he is no more. The news is shocking,” Amisi said.

The motive behind the assassination remains unknown. Investigations are underway, with police terming the killing as a targeted hit.

A photograph of the vehicle the MP was using at the time of the attack showed the shattered driver’s window—a chilling reminder of the close-range execution.

The country remains in mourning as Kenyans wait for justice to be served and answers to emerge from ongoing investigations.
