Safaricom Enables Direct PayPal Withdrawals via M‑Pesa App for Kenyan Users

Safaricom has rolled out a new feature allowing users to withdraw funds from PayPal directly through the M‑Pesa app, marking a significant leap in convenience and integration for Kenya’s growing digital workforce.

The move targets freelancers, remote workers, and online entrepreneurs who depend on PayPal for international payments. Until now, users had to navigate web portals, use third-party services, or perform multiple logins to access their funds. With this update, withdrawals can now be done with a few taps via smartphone.

How to Withdraw from PayPal Using the M‑Pesa App (Android only):

  • Download or update the latest M‑Pesa app
  • Scroll to the Global Payments section and tap the PayPal logo
  • Log in and link your PayPal account
  • Choose ‘withdraw’, enter the amount in USD
  • View the amount in Kenyan shillings and the exchange rate
  • Confirm the transaction

Funds will be credited to your M‑Pesa wallet within 2 hours to 3 days, depending on the transaction amount.

This new integration bypasses the need for banks or third-party platforms and offers a smoother, faster option compared to services like Equity Bank’s PayPal withdrawal system that relies on interbank transfers.

Safaricom’s M‑Pesa app has recorded 13.7 million downloads, with 4.7 million active users. The wallet now accommodates up to Ksh500,000 ($3,875), with per-transaction limits of Ksh250,000 ($1,938), and a daily cap of Ksh500,000.

By embedding PayPal into M‑Pesa’s ecosystem, Safaricom is strengthening its foothold in Kenya’s digital economy and positioning its platform as a vital tool for individual users and small businesses alike.

This mobile-first solution is being hailed as a game-changer in financial accessibility, offering users greater control, speed, and efficiency—all without stepping into a bank.
