Ruto Welcomes the World to Maasai Mara’s Spectacular Wildebeest Migration
President William Ruto has officially opened the wildebeest migration season at the Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of the world’s seven natural wonders. Donning traditional Maasai attire, Ruto witnessed the iconic migration along the Mara River on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
“We are gathered here in the Maasai Mara, a place where the world thrives, land breathes, and nature puts on her best performance,” the President declared. “This is the theatre of the great wildebeest migration—one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.”
A Symbol of Kenyan Resilience
President Ruto likened the journey of over 1.5 million wildebeest to the resilience of the Kenyan people: “Every year, these animals cross vast, unforgiving terrain in search of something better. Like them, Kenyans press on despite adversity—we adapt, rise, and move forward together.”
High Tourism Season
Narok County Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu noted that it’s currently high season, with thousands of tourists arriving to witness the mass migration from Tanzania into Kenya. “Just last week, Maasai Mara was recognized in the World Book of Records as one of the most unique places globally,” he stated.
Kenya’s Magic on Display
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano emphasized that the migration is more than just a spectacle. “This is not just a natural phenomenon—it’s a demonstration of how magical Kenya is,” she said. “We welcome the world to witness this miracle live from Magical Kenya.”
Global Recognition
On July 15, the World Book of Records in the UK officially certified Maasai Mara as home to the world’s greatest annual terrestrial wildlife migration. The reserve hosts an epic migration of wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes across the Mara River.
“This global accolade celebrates not only the awe-inspiring migration but also the ecological significance of the greater Maasai Mara ecosystem, which supports over 25% of Kenya’s biodiversity,” Governor Ntutu affirmed.
With the Maasai Mara gaining international spotlight, Kenya stands proud as it showcases the resilience of nature and the spirit of its people.
