Ruto Reserves 20% of Affordable Housing Units for Disciplined Forces
In a strategic move aimed at improving the welfare of Kenya’s security personnel, President William Ruto has announced that 20 per cent of all government-constructed affordable housing units will be allocated exclusively to the disciplined forces.
Addressing the nation during a high-profile ceremony in Nairobi, President Ruto said the allocation would be ringfenced to ensure members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Police Service, Kenya Prisons, and National Youth Service (NYS) directly benefit from the state’s affordable housing programme.
“As part of our policy program, I want to announce that 20 per cent of our housing units being developed under the affordable housing programme will go to the disciplined forces,” said Ruto. “These will be ringfenced for our members of the disciplined forces from the military, National Police, Kenya Prisons, and National Youth Service.”
The Head of State highlighted the chronic housing challenges faced by officers, especially in urban centres where accommodation costs remain high and government housing is scarce.
To further support homeownership, Ruto announced that the government will offer subsidised, single-digit interest rate loans to disciplined service members. Officers purchasing social housing units will pay interest rates as low as 3%, while those opting for affordable and high-market units will pay 6% and 9% respectively.
“These officers will benefit from affordable financing through single-digit interest rates. This will be as low as 3% for social housing, 6% for affordable housing, and 9% for high-market housing,” Ruto explained.
During the same event, the president revealed that 2,000 housing units for police officers have already been completed across the country. Additionally, procurement is underway for another 17,000 units.
In terms of military housing, Ruto disclosed that 3,000 housing units for the KDF are under construction, with a further 10,000 approved and awaiting implementation.
The announcement was made during the official launch of the Central Bank of Kenya Police Housing Complex in Industrial Area, Nairobi. President Ruto inaugurated several newly built units including 200 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom fully furnished apartments designated for police officers attached to CBK.
The government’s renewed focus on dignified living conditions for uniformed personnel is part of a broader push to improve public sector service delivery and morale through enhanced welfare programmes.
