Ruto Defends Church Donations, Gives Ksh20M to City Church, Pledges Ksh100M
President William Ruto has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting religious institutions, stating that he is unapologetic about his church donations. His remarks came as he donated Ksh20 million to the Jesus Winner Ministry in Roysambu during a Sunday service led by Bishop Edward Mwai.
Ruto: ‘I Am a Product of Giving’
Addressing the congregation on Sunday, March 2, Ruto questioned why some members of the clergy have criticized and even rejected his donations, arguing that offerings are meant for God, not man.
“I am blamed many times because of giving, but when we donate in church, we are doing so for God and not the congregation. I have tried reading the Bible but have not seen any verse that says if you donate to God, then the bishop will return the donation to you,” Ruto said.
The president went ahead to donate Ksh20 million and pledged another Ksh100 million toward the construction of the Jesus Winner Ministry church. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the church, stating that his efforts aim to silence critics.
“We will build this church so that we can shame the enemies of the nation of Kenya,” the president stated.
Controversy Over Church Donations
Ruto’s continued generosity towards churches has sparked debate, with some religious leaders voicing concerns over the source of such large donations. The issue gained traction last year when the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi declined a cash donation from the President and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja during a church service at Soweto Catholic Church.
Ruto questioned why the Catholic Church rejected his donation, stating that he has yet to find any valid reasons for their refusal.
Critics argue that political leaders should be transparent about their contributions, ensuring that religious institutions do not become conduits for questionable financial activities. However, Ruto has remained steadfast in his stance, reiterating that his giving aligns with biblical teachings.
Church and Politics: A Long-Standing Connection
The relationship between Kenyan politics and the church remains strong, with many politicians leveraging religious platforms to engage with the public. Ruto, known for his deep involvement in church activities, has consistently positioned himself as a leader who values faith-based contributions to society.
As debates continue over political donations to churches, it remains to be seen how different religious groups will respond to such contributions moving forward.
