Ruto Backs Arsenal as Kenya Hosts UEFA Champions League Trophy

President William Ruto on Friday officially received the iconic UEFA Champions League trophy at State House Nairobi, marking the prestigious cup’s return to Kenya after a 13-year absence. The event was part of the 2025 Heineken Trophy Tour, which included earlier stops in Vietnam, Indonesia, South Africa, and Zambia, before concluding in Kenya.

Addressing dignitaries, UEFA officials, Football Kenya Federation representatives, and passionate fans, Ruto expressed his excitement and pride in Kenya’s hosting of the world-renowned trophy.

“I am truly delighted to receive the UEFA Champions League trophy here in Kenya,” the President said. “We are honoured to host it once again, especially given the tremendous and passionate support that football enjoys across our country.”

The event coincided with the semi-final stage of the 2024–25 UEFA Champions League, with Arsenal, PSG, Barcelona, and Inter Milan battling for a spot in the final. Showing his personal side, Ruto revealed his support for Arsenal.

“Personally, I support Arsenal,” he said with a grin. “I hope they can overturn the result in Paris this week and reach the final – hopefully to lift the trophy for the first time in the club’s history.”

Also in attendance was German football legend Bastian Schweinsteiger, who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2013 and the FIFA World Cup with Germany in 2014. Ruto welcomed Schweinsteiger and his delegation warmly: “Karibu sana, Bastian and team – welcome to Kenya.”

The President used the opportunity to underscore the unifying power of football and its cultural and economic value.

“Football has the power to unite people – not just to cheer their favourite teams, but to celebrate special moments with family, friends, and even strangers,” he noted.

He encouraged Kenyan youth to emulate Schweinsteiger’s discipline and excellence: “It is my prayer that our young, aspiring footballers – both male and female – will emulate your dedication and help elevate Kenya in the world of competitive football.”

Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing football infrastructure, nurturing grassroots talent, and monetising sports through the Talanta Hela initiative.

“We will continue to invest in talent development and revamp the entire football ecosystem,” he stated. “We must turn football and other sports into viable sources of income and wealth – especially for our young people.”

Before concluding, Ruto invited Schweinsteiger and his team to explore Kenya’s natural beauty and vibrant culture, suggesting a visit to Nairobi National Park.

As the final head of state to receive the trophy on this five-nation tour, President Ruto’s involvement brought the UEFA Champions League experience closer to the hearts of Kenyan fans.

“Many of our fans may never experience the UEFA Champions League in person,” he said. “Simply seeing the trophy is a special moment for them.”
