Raila Odinga: Kenya Has Made Great Strides but More Needs to Be Done
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has expressed confidence in Kenya’s progress while emphasizing the need for continued efforts to build a better future. Speaking at an Iftar dinner in Upper Hill, Nairobi, Raila noted that the country is not in the same position it was years ago, though significant work remains.
Kenya’s Progress and Future Goals
Raila highlighted the progress made over the years, urging Kenyans to stay united in pursuit of national development.
“Let us remain united. We know the steps that we have taken, and we know where we are going. We all know where the country is supposed to be,” he stated.
Acknowledging the challenges that still exist, Raila reiterated that the country must keep moving forward.
“We are not where we wish to be, but the country must move forward. I am sure we will get where we want to be,” he said.
Democracy: A Work in Progress
The former Prime Minister also addressed the state of democracy in Kenya, explaining that while progress has been made, the journey is ongoing.
“Kenya has made strides, but democracy is not like instant coffee. It is a process; two steps forward and one step backward, we are still advancing,” he said.
He emphasized the need for electoral reforms, acknowledging that Kenya has yet to conduct fully free and fair elections.
“We are not yet there. We do not conduct a free and fair election, but we will get there,” Raila stated.
Call for Sacrifice and Unity
Raila urged Kenyans to make sacrifices for the betterment of the nation, stressing the importance of selflessness in national progress.
“We must all sacrifice. We will get where we want to be. We are sure we will get there, but we do not want selfishness. Kenya must move forward together as one,” he added.
Identity Cards for All Kenyans
Addressing the issue of national identity cards, Raila supported President William Ruto’s recent directive that all Kenyans should be issued IDs without discrimination.
“I heard people saying President Ruto was wrong to say all Kenyans should be given IDs. All Kenyans should get IDs without any discrimination,” Raila stated.
He recalled how communities in Kibera had suffered for years due to difficulties in obtaining national identification documents. President Ruto has since declared that all Kenyans will be issued IDs at no cost and has vowed to eliminate the bureaucracy and bias in the process.
A United Path Forward
As Kenya continues on its path of development, Raila’s message serves as a reminder that while progress has been made, the journey is far from over. His call for unity, sacrifice, and electoral reforms highlights the areas where the country must focus to ensure a better future for all Kenyans.
