Raila Hosts Somaliland President Mohamed Abdirahman in Nairobi
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Tuesday welcomed Somaliland President Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi, popularly known as Ciro, to his residence in Nairobi.
The visit, which comes just a day after Somaliland National Day celebrations at KICC, Nairobi, underscores the strengthening ties between Kenyan leaders and Somaliland officials. President Abdirahman was accompanied by members of his cabinet and representatives from Somaliland’s liaison office in Kenya.
“Mama Ida and I hosted the President of Somaliland, HE Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi (Ciro), at our home,” Raila announced on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a photo of the two leaders in cordial conversation.
President Abdirahman lauded Odinga, calling him “an esteemed statesman and one of the dearest friends of Somaliland.”
“Your unwavering support for Somaliland’s aspiration to claim its rightful place among the community of nations is deeply appreciated. Your leadership and steadfast commitment to Africa’s unity and development continue to inspire us all,” the president said.
The visit marks a continuation of diplomatic outreach by Somaliland, a self-declared republic seeking international recognition. Although not formally recognized by most nations, Somaliland operates with its own government and maintains diplomatic missions in various countries, including Kenya.
Analysts view the meeting as symbolic, reflecting mutual respect and political solidarity, especially as Somaliland continues to lobby for its international status.
The Somali President’s presence in Nairobi and his recognition of Odinga’s leadership further highlight Kenya’s strategic importance in regional diplomacy and Pan-African dialogue.
