President Ruto to Grace Labour Day Diamond Jubilee at Uhuru Gardens
President William Ruto is expected to lead the nation in commemorating the 60th Labour Day at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, marking a significant Diamond Jubilee celebration for Kenya’s workers.
The event, organized by the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K), highlights six decades of advocacy for workers’ rights in Kenya. This year’s dual celebration commemorates both Labour Day and the 60th anniversary of COTU-K’s founding.
According to the official programme, activities began early in the morning with trade union leaders, workers, and invited guests assembling along Lang’ata Road and at Uchumi Parking. A colorful procession of floats, led by the Administration Police Band, added a festive atmosphere to the day.
Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua started the day by signing the Labour Day visitors’ book at the COTU-K headquarters in Gikomba. He then proceeded to Uhuru Gardens accompanied by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli and union executives.
President Ruto is scheduled to arrive at 9:30 a.m., where he will be officially received by CS Mutua and the COTU leadership. The event features interfaith prayers, entertainment segments, and a symbolic workers’ march-past, leading up to addresses by COTU officials, the Labour CS, and the President himself.
As the Chief Guest, President Ruto is expected to tackle pressing labour issues in his address. Key among them are wages, employment, industrial harmony, and the government’s roadmap for Kenya’s labour sector amid economic challenges.
The celebrations take place against a backdrop of mounting demands from trade unions for wage increases and improved working conditions, as Kenyan workers grapple with job losses, inflation, and reduced take-home pay.
This year’s Labour Day not only honors workers but also offers a platform for renewing the commitment to fair labour practices in the face of a rapidly shifting economic landscape.
