President Ruto Meets Kosovo’s Vjosa Osmani Amid Diplomatic Tension With Serbia

President William Ruto has once again found himself at the centre of a diplomatic controversy in Europe after meeting Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani during his trip to the Vatican.

The brief meeting took place on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ burial in Vatican City on April 26, 2025, and comes just a month after Kenya officially recognised Kosovo as an independent state — a move that has strained Nairobi’s relations with Serbia.

Photos shared by President Osmani captured the cordial interaction between the two leaders, with Osmani describing Ruto as “Kosovo’s great friend” and affirming that their discussion centred on enhancing bilateral ties between Kenya and Kosovo.

“Always a pleasure to meet Kosovo’s great friend, President William Ruto, and discuss next steps in strengthening our bilateral relations, bringing the people of Kosovo and Kenya even closer,” Osmani stated.

Kenya’s recognition of Kosovo on March 26, 2025, made it the first country in five years to do so, a decision that drew sharp condemnation from Serbia. The Serbian government accused Kenya of violating international law and breaching the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which reaffirms Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Following Kenya’s recognition, Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the move as “an unacceptable and hostile act,” threatening diplomatic repercussions.

Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008, has struggled to achieve full international recognition, facing staunch opposition from Serbia and powerful allies like Russia and China, who hold veto power at the UN.

President Ruto’s actions have sparked debate back home, with critics labelling him a “diplomatic flip-flopper.” His shifting alliances have been highlighted by Kenya’s recent moves, including siding with China on the Taiwan issue and simultaneously criticising the United Nations Security Council’s permanent members for their roles in global conflicts.

Despite the controversy, Ruto appears undeterred, continuing efforts to forge new alliances and expand Kenya’s global partnerships. Whether this bold diplomacy will strengthen Kenya’s international standing or further strain critical relations remains to be seen.
