President Ruto Hails Raila Odinga as a Selfless Patriot: “History Will Judge Him Fairly”
President William Ruto has praised Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga as a true patriot and statesman who has consistently prioritized Kenya’s national interest over personal ambition.
Speaking on Saturday during the burial of Raila’s long-serving aide and bodyguard, George Oduor, in Ndori, Siaya County, President Ruto reflected on his long journey with the former Prime Minister and emphasized the profound respect he holds for him.
“History is going to judge Raila Odinga fairly. Whenever there is an opportunity to stand for the nation, he has always stood for the nation,” Ruto declared, adding, “I’m very proud our paths crossed and we have come this journey together.”
Ruto commended Raila for choosing unity and national peace over partisan politics, especially during a time when collaboration between the two leaders was considered unlikely.
“For avoidance of doubt, when Baba came to stand with me, it was not about him, his interest, parochial or sectarian or narrow interest, it’s about the greater interest of Kenya,” the President said.
He recounted his political history with Raila, highlighting their time as allies before becoming rivals and, most recently, collaborators once again.
“I have come a very long way with Raila Odinga and I want to stand here today and say I did not know that the man I stood by and gave my all at a moment in my life would eventually become my competitor, and later come to anchor my leadership,” he said.
The emotional tribute came as the nation mourned George Oduor, a close and loyal bodyguard who had protected Raila since 1995. Oduor passed away on April 2 after a short illness, and his death marked the end of nearly three decades of service to the ODM leader.
The ceremony was attended by a host of political leaders from across the divide, symbolizing a moment of national unity and mutual respect.
President Ruto’s heartfelt remarks are likely to fuel fresh optimism among Kenyans hoping for continued bipartisan cooperation, especially as the country prepares for key economic and constitutional reforms.
Ruto’s public appreciation of Raila Odinga’s legacy signals a possible new era in Kenya’s political culture—one where rivals can collaborate for the nation’s good.
