Pregnant Woman Dies in Kisii Hospital Due to Alleged Doctor Negligence
Kisii County is in mourning following the tragic death of a 27-year-old expectant mother at Magena Dispensary. The woman, identified as Ratemo, died alongside her unborn child due to alleged negligence by medical staff at the facility.
Ignored Cries for Help
According to reports, Ratemo arrived at Magena Dispensary in labor, expecting to receive the necessary medical attention. However, despite her distress, nurses allegedly dismissed her concerns, insisting that her time had not yet come. Witnesses claim she was left unattended throughout the night and into the following day.
“She repeatedly called for help, telling the doctors she felt ready, but they kept insisting that her time had not yet come,” a source familiar with the incident reported.
Tragically, as soon as her water broke, she began bleeding heavily. Her calls for help were ignored, and by the time her condition was noticed, it was too late. Both she and her unborn child lost their lives due to a lack of medical intervention.
Doctors and Nurses Flee Hospital
In a shocking turn of events, reports indicate that upon realizing the patient had died, doctors and nurses at the facility fled, abandoning her body. Her remains were left unattended until Wednesday morning when fellow patients raised the alarm. Furious residents gathered at the dispensary, demanding answers from the hospital staff. Some even threatened to take action against the medics, leading to their escape from the facility.
“The moment her roommates realized she had passed away, they informed the doctor. As news of her death spread, angry residents gathered at the facility, and sensing the growing fury, all the medics fled, abandoning the body at the hospital,” an eyewitness recounted.
The woman’s body reportedly remained at the dispensary for hours as locals refused to let it be moved without an explanation. Eventually, authorities intervened, and the body was transferred to the mortuary.
Governor Simba Arati Condemns Incident
Kisii Governor Simba Arati has strongly condemned the tragic incident, terming it an unacceptable failure in the healthcare system. He vowed that those responsible for the alleged negligence would be held accountable.
“This is one of the cases we have been addressing in many of our facilities. If it is due to negligence, those responsible must face the full force of the law. To the family of the deceased, we sympathize with you. Accept our sincere condolences,” Governor Arati stated.
He assured Kisii residents that his administration is committed to improving healthcare services and reducing maternal mortality. The county government has launched an investigation into the incident, promising that necessary action will be taken against those found culpable.
Public Outrage and Calls for Justice
The tragic death of Ratemo has sparked outrage across social media platforms, with many Kenyans calling for the immediate dismissal and prosecution of the medical staff involved. Concerned citizens have urged the government to ensure proper healthcare services in rural areas and to hold negligent healthcare workers accountable.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in Kenya’s healthcare system, particularly in maternal health. As investigations continue, the public remains hopeful that justice will be served and that meaningful reforms will be implemented to prevent such tragedies in the future.
