Pope Francis spent a “peaceful” night and remains alert, according to the Vatican, despite his condition continuing to be described as “critical.” The 88-year-old pontiff is currently receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for pneumonia in both lungs, compounded by a “prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis.”
Vatican officials revealed that Pope Francis required blood transfusions due to a low platelet count linked to anaemia. Although he was more unwell on Saturday than on Friday, the Pope is said to have rested well overnight. “He is the Pope,” one official remarked, “but he is also a man.”
The Pope was first admitted to the hospital on 14 February after experiencing breathing difficulties for several days. His vulnerability to lung infections stems from a history of pleurisy—an inflammation of the lung lining—he suffered as a young adult, which led to the removal of part of one lung at age 21.
This is not Pope Francis’ first hospitalisation during his 12-year papacy. In March 2023, he was admitted for three nights with bronchitis. However, his current condition appears to be the most serious yet, with the Vatican confirming that his prognosis “remains guarded.”
Global Concern and Community Prayers
Catholics worldwide are closely monitoring the Pope’s condition, particularly during this Jubilee year, which is expected to draw large numbers of visitors to Rome for significant religious events. Despite his illness, Pope Francis has shown his resilient spirit—praying in the hospital chapel and spending time reading in his armchair, even under a “high flow” of oxygen.
The Vatican has been transparent in its updates, releasing daily statements about the Pope’s health. Still, the fluctuating tone of these announcements has left many followers concerned and speculating about his true condition. Saturday’s update has been the most candid yet, though it stopped short of offering a long-term prognosis.
Although doctors previously indicated that the Pope was responding to treatment, they emphasized the fragility of his condition, noting that even minor changes could destabilize his “delicate balance.”
In Rome, well-wishers have been gathering outside Gemelli Hospital, leaving candles, flowers, and letters of support. At St. Peter’s Basilica, however, the atmosphere has remained subdued, with no significant crowds forming.
A Pope Who Never Rests
Known for his hands-on approach and dislike for inactivity, Pope Francis has struggled with being confined to the hospital. Nevertheless, he continues to follow his faith’s rituals, praying and staying mentally engaged despite his weakened state.
The Vatican had previously announced that the Pope would not appear in public for the Sunday prayer for the second consecutive week. This decision has deepened the concerns of many Catholics who see his absence as a serious sign of his health’s decline.
As Rome holds its breath, the world joins in prayer for Pope Francis, hoping for his recovery while preparing for any outcome. His dedication to openness about his health has allowed the global Catholic community to share in both the concern and the hope surrounding the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
